 DNN v3 Portal Management Minimize

This section highlights new features and covers key items related to portal management in DNN v3.

Host Settings

  • The Host | Host Settings page has a new Site Configuration section at the top where you'll find some basic portal configuration info. Here you'll find the current DNN version, data provider type, .NET framework version, ASP.NET identity, and host name.
  • The Host | Host Settings page in v3.0.10 has new settings in the Advanced Settings | Other Settings section: Scheduler Mode and Enable Event Log Buffer. These control system scheduler and logging performance - see the inline help (question mark icon) next to each item for details.
  • The Host | Host Settings | Advanced Settings | Other Settings: Enable Friendly URLs, which is turned on by default. Use this setting to make your site navigation scheme more friendly to search engines.
  • The Host | Host Settings | Advanced Settings | SMTP Server Settings section has a new SMTP Authentication option. The choices are: Anonymous, Basic, and NTLM.

Portal Admin (Site Settings)

  • The Admin | Site Settings | Appearance section has links to directly upload files from this page for the site logo and body background. You no longer have to visit the File Manager before coming here to set these.

Portal Setup

  • Throughout many of the Admin and Host modules, new (or often improved) Help is available on the drop-down menu next to the module name at the top of the module.
  • The portal banner no longer comes turned on by default, which is nice (it wasn't obvious how to change it before). You can turn it on/off on Admin | Site Settings | Advanced Settings | Other Settings: set Banner Advertising = None, Site, or Host. To display your own banner - create a vendor, add a banner and set banner advertising back to Site. If you set the Banner Group of your banner to “Site Banner“, it will be displayed in the default upper-right corner location. You can also display a banner anywhere on a page using a Banner module.
  • There's a new Site Logging option to save to a file rather than the database to help keep the database size in check. Go to Host Settings | Advanced Settings | Other Settings: set Site Log Storage to File System. It would be nice to have a Both option here to let Admin set a short database logging interval for online site log viewing convenience, but still allow long term logging to a file.
  • There's a number of new documents in the DNN download that you'll want to look at - check the Documentation\public directory in your portal install path. There may be updates to these in the release version, or more docs added.

Users and Roles

  • Once you've added a user, you can no longer change the username (but you can change all other user info). This is a requirement of the new Membership provider.
  • When you add a new user and the screen refreshes, it only lists the new user on the page. You can list all users or match a subset of users by using the search box. Enter the first few letters of the name, or use % and _ wildcards in the name.
  • Users can now choose their Preferred Language and Time Zone in the user profile (click on the username once logged in). Setting Preferred Language will display the site's static content in that language when the user is logged in.
  • Users are not shared between portals or child portals - this is again a Membership provider function (see the Membership guide in the documentation directory for details).

File Manager (FM)

  • To move or copy files - first put a check by each file you want to affect in the right pane. Click the move or copy button at the top and you're prompted to click on the desired folder in the treeview in the left pane. You'll get a final confirmation dialog - click OK. For some reason this wasn't intuitive to me when I first saw it.
  • You can now set permissions by role for folder visibility and file uploads on the bottom of the File Manager page. The Write to Folder permission controls file uploads. You have to set the role permissions per folder and click update for each. In the betas, there have been various permissions refresh problems after you change permissions on a folder - you may have to click off the folder and back or switch views to view the correct permissions set.
  • As Admin, you can view the amount of file space used on the File Manager in the status bar on the bottom of the FM window.

Page management

  • When you add a new Page to the site - you must explicitly set its permissions (click Settings in the Page Functions area of the admin icon bar | Basic Settings | Page Details | Permissions). Pages aren't visible when they're added to a portal unless you explicitely set their view permissions. This is a change from v2, and is probably a good thing as you don't want visitors to see a page without any content. Configure the page content to your liking and make it visible when you're ready for it to go public. There's no visual indication that a page is visible only to the Admin user (unlike Modules - which show a red Admin box as a flag around the content).
  • Page settings (click the Settings link for a page in the Page Functions section in the Admin icon bar) Advanced Settings | Other Settings | Link Type - there are three choices: URL, Page, and File. If you want a standard Page (content page with modules) - choose URL and leave the Link URL's Location setting at its default value: “http://“. You can also choose Page to redirect this page to another page on your portal, and File to open a file that's been uploaded to your portal. Choosing URL and setting the URL redirects to that URL when you click on the tab.

  • There's a new admin shortcut icon in the lower-right corner of modules that takes you directly to the module settings page.
  • The Module Permissions settings have changed. Use the Module Settings | Security Settings: Inherit View Permissions from Page checkbox as a general rule, unless you want other specific settings.
  • If a module is only visible to Admin - a red box appears around the module content as a flag.
  • If you want to hide the container on a module, first edit the module settings. Under Page Settings | Basic Settings, uncheck the Display Container? checkbox. Note that you'll still see the container in Admin mode - click the Preview icon, or log off to see the page as the user sees it.
  • In Module Settings | Page Settings | Basic Settings, there are now checkboxes for Display Title (uncheck to hide the module's title text), Allow Print (uncheck to hide the module print icon), and Allow Syndicate (check to show an RSS link on the module). RSS is a content publishing scheme that allows content to be read in an external 'news aggregator' application through a subscription.
  • Use the new Module Header and Footer settings (in the Module Settings | Advanced Settings section) to add text or HTML elements around your content. For example, on an Image module you can put a link above an image and a caption below it. You can also put the opening "a href=" anchor tag in the header and the closing "/a" tag in the footer to create a link on an image.
  • Use the Add Existing Module option (in the Admin icon bar) to get a copy of another module with content. Changes you make to one also change the other. However, there's no way to tell where another instance of a module lives (or if another instance even exists). Deleting a copy of a module doesn't move it to the Recycle Bin (only deleting the last visible copy of a module does this).
  • The Image module no longer returns the image size as the default Height and Width when you add an image. You've got to look at the image properties to determine the size if you want to scale the image. This is a step backward in my opinion.

Site Search

  • Here's a forum post that describes the new Site Search mechanism in some detail.
  • Here's another post that describes the Relevance value given in the Search Results page. This confused me at first - there didn't seem to be any pattern to the value, but there is!
  • There's a Host | Search Admin page that lets the portal host fiddle with a few settings. The key control on this page is the Re-index Content link that does exactly that.
